Guide to choosing the right ice hockey stick

When shopping for hockey sticks, it’s important to consider several factors such as grip, length, size, flex, and curve. If you're new to the sport, it might seem overwhelming—but let’s break it down into digestible parts:

Do you use LH or RH?

The first and perhaps most important thing to figure out is whether you need a left-handed (LH) or right-handed (RH) hockey stick. Luckily, it’s easy to determine. If you prefer playing with your left hand at the bottom of the stick, you should go with LH. If you play with your right hand at the bottom, RH is the way to go.

Stick length

Choosing the right stick length is crucial. A stick that's too long can feel awkward and hard to control, while a stick that's too short may lead to poor posture and limit your ability to keep your eyes on the puck and the game.

As a rule of thumb, the stick should reach your chin when you're on skates. However, the ideal length can vary depending on your position and personal preferences.

Stick size

The size of your stick is closely related to your preferences and style of play. Traditionally, defensemen have preferred longer sticks for greater control and reach. However, there’s no absolute right or wrong. You should play with the length that feels right to you.

Hockey sticks come in fixed heights, and not every player can just grab one off the rack that fits perfectly. In these cases, you’ll need to either cut the stick down or extend it using an end plug.

Keep in mind that cutting the stick will increase its flex (make it stiffer), while adding an extension will soften the shaft. Most sticks have a chart on the back of the shaft that shows the new flex level if the stick is shortened.

Stick flex

Flex indicates how much your stick bends. Beginners typically benefit from a stick with lower flex for better puck control. More experienced players might prefer a slightly stiffer stick with higher flex for stronger shots.

Stick curve

The curve of the blade refers to how much the blade bends at the end of the stick. Different brands produce sticks with various curves. Just like most hockey gear, there’s no “one-size-fits-all” here—it’s a matter of taste and preference. The main difference between curves is how “open” the blade is and how much it bends.

While a good hockey stick can be crucial to your performance, it's only the beginning. You don’t want to skimp on equipment—and that applies fully in the world of hockey. To give yourself the best chance to perform well, it’s essential to have the right gear.
